From around age 10 to about 25, we discover, learn from and adapt to the world around us. We forge our sense of who we are and who we aspire to be.
We learn to make decisions, manage our emotions, and create deeper connections with peers, romantic partners and others in our communities. We also build resilience, and develop interests, passions, and meaningful goals that shape our adult lives. All adolescents need supportive social environments, stimulating learning experiences, and diverse extracurricular activities in our communities to thrive.
We need to make sure that all young people can access the opportunities of adolescence. The Youth and Young Adult Health Program in the Maternal and Child Health Unit identifies and supports programs designed to support adolescents in their development, with the goal of adolescents transitioning into a health, happy, and productive adulthood.
Current efforts include: Preventing adolescent injury and death by promoting motor vehicle safety among young drivers, and preventing adolescent suicide . Supporting access to mental health care . Educating on key components of a healthy and independent adulthood.
