Hastings-on-Hudson has been selected for Round Three of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF), and this time we have been awarded $50,000! YCAF aims to empower young people to design, implement, and spearhead climate solutions that foster a more resilient future for everyone. The program is geared at youth in our community who want to make a difference in climate, the environment, and sustainability.

The conditions of the grant are about the same as the last two rounds, but with a longer timeframe that allows more time for youths to apply for, work on, and complete their projects. All youth who meet the eligibility criteria can apply, including those who won in past years (there is one caveat to this: if you won and participated in previous rounds, you cannot repeat the same project this year). Eligibility.

Microgrant applicants must be 15 to 24 years old. You can apply with a group of friends, as long as one person in the group is over 15. If you are younger than 15, we will try to find you an eligible partner to work with (if you want to be paired with a partner, please email us at ycaf2026@hohny.

gov . Budget. The budget for each project should be $1,000 to $5,000 and broadly align with the Village’s Climate Action Plan priority areas (Buildings & Energy, Connectivity, Flooding Mitigation, and Adaptation to Climate Change) .

To abide by Bloomberg Philanthropies' rules, projects that are less than $1,000 will not be eligible. Grants will be awarded for as long as funds are available. Deadlines: Proposals should be submitted as soon as possible and no later than September 30 th , 2026 (we hope to announce awardees in mid to late October).

Projects must be completed by April 15 th , 2027, at the latest. Application Process. All applicants must submit an application form that includes a description of the project idea and the expected impact.

Hastings-on-Hudson Climate Priorities Buildings and Infrastructure : Buildings and infrastructure are meant to address changing how we design, build, and maintain our physical surroundings to survive extreme weather and rising temperatures. It protects people from heat waves, floods, and storms while keeping water, power, and transit systems running.

Some things to think about are heating and cooling, materials used for the construction of buildings and infrastructure such as low carbon concrete, and how materials are the transported to a building site. Connectivity : Connectivity refers to the means and modalities to get from one place to another.

Think about how to address multiple forms of transport including sidewalks, bike lanes roads and natural and man-made paths for traveling to the various places that one might want to go. For instance, having bike paths and sidewalks that connect residential areas to the school shopping, recreation, entertainment, friends and neighbors.

Flood Mitigation: Flood mitigation refers to any action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk and severity of property damage, injury, and loss of life caused by floods. It involves proactive strategies implemented before a disaster strikes rather than reacting after water rises.

For rising sea level and tides during storms we can think about where we build structures or what to do with preexisting structures in low lying areas such as elevating or creating barriers or water containment areas. Regarding large storms that produce a lot of rain in a short period of time we can think about nature-based solutions such as rain gardens and bioretention basins.

Climate Adaptation : The process of adjusting to actual or expected climate change and its effects.

If you are younger than 15 don’t be daunted – the Mayor’s Climate Youth Council will try to find you an eligible partner to work with (if you want to paired with a partner please email: hohmayorscyc@gmail. com ). Budget.

The budget for each project should be $1,000 to $5,000 and broadly align with the Village’s Climate Action Plan priority areas (Buildings & Energy, Transportation, Waste & Water, and Adaptation). Don’t be put off if you think your project will cost less than that, let us know and we will check to see if we can cluster smaller projects to meet the minimum threshold. Grants will be awarded for as long as funds are available.
