Julia Rappaport Growing Gardeners Fund - American Horticultural Society Julia Rappaport Growing Gardeners Endowment FROM CLASSROOM TO GARDEN: CULTIVATING A PASSION FOR NATURE The Julia Rappaport Growing Gardeners Endowment offers annual grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for educators to initiate or enhance gardening projects in schools and communities.
This program aims to provide youth with hands-on gardening experiences to inspire a lifelong passion for gardening, the natural world, and horticulture. Application period is open from now until April 26, 2026.
Applicants should outline their project, objectives, plans, timeline, staff involvement, budget, and expected impact on youth Grant recipients will be announced at the annual National Children & Youth Garden Symposium in July; attendance at the Symposium is not required The 2025 Rappaport grant recipient is Congress Park School in Brookfield, IL. The project was proposed by third grade teachers Kristine Carbray and Vanessa Reyes .
S tudents will revitalize and create butterfly garden beds and improve the school’s campus; connect monarch butterflies to the dual language program themes of cross-cultural understanding and geography of the Americas; learn about butterfly life cycles and migration patterns; and gain valuable exposure to nature while deepening their understanding of ecosystems and global connections.
The 2024 Rappaport grant recipient was Curley K-8 School in Boston, MA , the largest K-8 school in the Boston Public School System . The project was proposed by science specialist Jennifer Frazier. The school built raised garden beds and installed plantings to support life science curriculum for pre-kindergarten through second grade teachers, including lessons on seeds, vermiculture, plant cycles, and pollinators .
This initiative is made possible through the generosity of Thomas Byrd and Valerie Rappaport and their family in honor of Valerie’s mother, Julia Rappaport, a dedicated AHS member and board member who loved gardening, science, and education.
