A man who excelled at everything he put his hand to – and who always had his hand in several endeavors at once – Fred Dettwiller was a thoughtful, comfortably introverted yet strong and active leader who accomplished much and touched many lives by not letting his ego get in the way of making a difference. Owner of one of Tennessee’s largest beverage distributors, Det Distributing, Fred Dettwiller was also an ordained priest who served as a canon in the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee and established the chaplaincy program at Metropolitan Nashville Airport’s public safety department. He also served as chaplain at several other local, state and national public safety agencies, including the Secret Service. As reflected in the Dettwiller Foundation’s areas of focus, he also championed civil rights, education and the arts through his lifelong, deep involvement in the Tennessee and Mid-South community. The Board of Directors will finalize funding decisions for 2026 in June and December with disbursements in July 2026 and January 2027. 2026 Grant Cycle Update: Beginning in 2026, the Foundation will require first-time applicants and organizations returning after at least 18 months without funding to submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) before being invited to complete a full application.
The Letter of Intent should briefly summarize your organization’s mission, the proposed project or purpose of funding, the population served, how your work aligns with the Foundation’s mission, and your annual operating budget. Eligible applicants must be a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit for a minimum of three years and have an annual operating budget of at least $300,000.
The Dettwiller Foundation does not support: Individuals or their projects Disease-specific organizations seeking support for national research projects or programs Other grantmaking organizations Projects, programs, or organizations with a limited audience Letters of Intent should be emailed to info@dettwillerfoundation. org.
After submitting an LOI, the organization must wait to receive an invitation from the Foundation before proceeding with a full application. Submission: You may submit your grant application by either completing the form below on our website or by sending a Microsoft Word or PDF file, along with any supporting documents, directly to info@dettwillerfoundation. org.
