ARPA-E's OPEN programs support the research and development of potentially disruptive new technologies across the full spectrum of energy applications. Learn more about ARPA-E's previous OPEN programs using the links below. * Since ARPA-E’s inception, its OPEN programs have advanced transformative energy breakthroughs in critical areas that fall outside the scope of the agency’s focused technology programs.
In 2024, Vision OPEN challenged the research community to develop groundbreaking technologies aligned with three specific goals to enable a future energy landscape that is dramatically different than today’s.
Vision OPEN’s three goals include: (1) emission free abundant primary energy, (2)an intermodal energy superhighway that transports diversified forms of primary energy, and (3) a carbon transition that sustainably meets demand for polymers and other materials. Achieving these three goals will necessitate development and deployment of disruptive and ambitious technologies at an unparalleled speed and scale.
* In 2021, ARPA-E issued its fifth OPEN funding opportunity designed to catalyze transformational breakthroughs across the entire spectrum of energy technologies. ARPA-E awarded $175 million among 68 projects across 22 states and 13 technical areas under OPEN 2021. * In 2018, ARPA-E issued its fourth OPEN funding opportunity designed to catalyze transformational breakthroughs across the entire spectrum of energy technologies.
ARPA-E awarded $199 million among 77 projects across 30 states and 13 technical areas under OPEN 2018. * In 2015, ARPA-E issued its third OPEN funding opportunity designed to catalyze transformational breakthroughs across the entire spectrum of energy technologies. ARPA-E awarded $125 million among 41 projects across 20 states and 13 technical areas under OPEN 2015.
* In 2012, ARPA-E issued its second OPEN funding opportunity designed to catalyze transformational breakthroughs across the entire spectrum of energy technologies. ARPA-E awarded $130 million among 66 projects across 24 states and 13 technical areas under OPEN 2012. * In 2009, ARPA-E issued an open call for the most revolutionary energy technologies to form the agency's inaugural program.
The first OPEN solicitation was open to ideas from all energy areas and focused on funding projects already equipped with strong research and development plans for their potentially high-impact technologies. The projects selected received a level of financial support that could accelerate technical progress and catalyze additional investment from the private sector.
