Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Grants | Department of Energy Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Grants The Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Grants Program is designed to provide grants to ensure that the United States has a viable domestic manufacturing and recycling capability to support a North American battery supply chain. Contact: BIL-Batterymanufacturing@hq. doe.
gov Demonstration projects, construction of commercial-scale facilities, and retrofit or retooling of existing facilities for battery component manufacturing, advanced battery manufacturing, and recycling. Institutions of higher education, national laboratories, nonprofit and for-profit private entities, state and local governments, and consortia of entities described in paragraphs (1) through (4). Available until expended.
Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Grants is funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA 40207 (c)). Funding Details and Announcements Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing Grants - Round 3 MDO announced $500 million across seven selected projects that will expand U.S. critical mineral and material processing and derivative battery and recycling capacity.
See the five selected projects and project descriptions under this activity listed below.
Nth Cycle, Inc.: Southeastern U.S. Federal share: $100 million The outcome of this project will be a facility in the Southeastern United States that refines black mass from end‑of‑life lithium‑ion batteries and manufacturing scrap into high‑purity metals and battery‑grade materials, using Nth Cycle’s electroextraction platform and OYSTER system – helping to close the gap in midstream processing here in the U.S. This project will establish domestic refining capacity for critical minerals, reducing U.S. reliance on China and other foreign sources for materials essential to energy, defense, and industrial applications.
Princeton NuEnergy Inc.: Commerce, GA Federal share: $50 million This project will build a demonstration facility in Georgia to recover and rejuvenate nickel‑containing cathode material from battery manufacturing scrap using a low‑temperature plasma process. The effort aims to create a domestic source of battery‑grade cathode material by rapidly returning rejuvenated material to production at significantly lower cost.
Arcanum Ventures, LLC. : Location TBD Federal share: $50 million This project will construct a facility in the United States Gulf Coast to produce battery‑grade ethylene carbonate, a key ingredient in lithium‑ion battery electrolytes, using proven chemical‑processing technology.
By integrating with existing domestic manufacturing infrastructure, the project will improve supply reliability and reduce dependence on imports for this critical material. Elevated Materials, LLC: Location TBD Federal share: $50 million This project will build a facility in the United States to produce ultra‑thin lithium‑metal films and prelithiated materials that enable higher‑energy, faster‑charging batteries.
This project scales proven pilot‑level technology to gigawatt‑hour production, addressing the lack of a safe, cost‑effective domestic manufacturing process for advanced lithium‑anode materials. Coreshell Technologies Incorporated.
: San Leandro, CA Federal share: $50 million This project will establish U.S. manufacturing capacity for silicon‑anode lithium‑ion electrodes and cells, replacing imported graphite with domestically sourced metallurgical silicon. By pairing silicon‑anode designs with dry‑coating cathode technology, the project will reduce costs, improve safety, and create the first U.S. gigafactory dedicated to silicon‑anode battery production.
Notice of Funding Opportunity Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing Grants – Round 2 Funding Opportunity Announcement Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing Grants – Round 1 DOE has awarded a total of $1.
82 billion to 14 projects that will build and expand commercial-scale facilities to extract lithium, graphite, and other battery materials, manufacture components, and demonstrate new approaches, including manufacturing components from recycled materials. Combined Federal/Private sector investment total of more than $5.
6 billion to boost American production of clean energy technology, create over 2,500 good-paying jobs, and support President Biden’s national goals for electric vehicles to make up half of all new vehicle sales by 2030 and to transition to a net-zero emissions economy by 2050.

The Department of Energy's Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation is spending to break America's 95% dependence on foreign rare earths. The strategy is unusual: recover critical materials from the waste streams of coal plants, smelters, and refineries that already exist. Here is the full funding architecture — the $75M just awarded, the $500M battery-materials round, the $1B pipeline behind them — and how an industrial operator should position for what comes next.
Read articleOn August 20, 2026 the Energy Department named seven selections across the Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling programs. Three of the seven are recycling or reprocessing. Two awards hit the $100 million ceiling. The round is 83% smaller than Round 2, and the composition tells you exactly what DOE will fund next.
Read articleThe Alternative Fuels and Feedstocks Office issued a Notice of Intent on July 14 for ASPECT — up to $58 million in cooperative agreements for producing chemicals from alternative and waste feedstocks, with the full NOFO expected August 24, 2026. Two topic areas, four sub-topics, 2-to-5-year performance periods, a required concept paper, and one requirement most applicants will miss: every project needs a for-profit industry partner, and universities cannot lead Topic Area 2. Here is how to use the pre-NOFO window.
