Biomaterials (BMAT) | NSF - U.S. National Science Foundation MPS Materials Research Programs (MPS Materials) Important information for proposers and award recipients All proposals must be submitted in accordance with the requirements specified in the funding opportunity and in the Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) and its supplements .
All NSF grants and cooperative agreements are subject to the applicable set of NSF award terms and conditions . NSF has updated its research security policies for NSF funded projects. Supports research and education on biological, biomimetic, bioinspired and bioenabled materials, and on synthetic materials intended for applications where they will be in contact with biological systems.
Supports research and education on biological, biomimetic, bioinspired and bioenabled materials, and on synthetic materials intended for applications where they will be in contact with biological systems. The Biomaterials program supports foundational materials research that emphasizes novel biomaterials design, development, and discovery of new phenomena.
The program supports research in the following topic areas: Ideas and platforms that improve efficiency and accelerate discovery. Integration of experiments and theory to discover, design, and characterize biomaterials. Tailoring biomaterials towards biotechnology advancements.
Within the key topics above, the program supports research involving the following biomaterials: Engineered living materials. Dynamic, responsive and smart biomaterial systems that incorporate functionality over time and length scales. Biological, biomimetic, bioinspired and bio-enabled materials.
Synthetic materials intended for applications where they will interact with biological systems and the interactions inform scientific advances. Fungal, plant-based and biomineralized materials. Biomaterials with targeted properties.
The program also supports foundational materials research that provides platforms and pipelines for biotechnology developments. The program supports projects that are usually interdisciplinary. Supported projects may encompass scales from the nanoscopic to the bulk scale.
Supported projects may involve the following: Design, preparation, characterization, and modification. Studies of structure-property relationships and interfacial behavior. Combinations of experiment, theory, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to advance biomaterials development.
Supported projects may include in vitro demonstrations of biological compatibility and efficacy. However, the program can support only limited in vivo studies. Tissue engineering and drug/gene delivery projects must focus on foundational materials development and characterization.
The program does not encourage projects focused on cell biology for material design since such projects are not rooted in materials properties.

NSF 26-521 folds eight materials programs into one solicitation carrying $100 million and 200 to 300 awards. Proposals are accepted anytime — but no individual may appear as PI or co-PI on more than one proposal per fiscal year across all eight programs. That single sentence reshapes how materials labs collaborate.
Read articleNSF 26-519 puts $150 million and 300 chemistry awards on a rolling submission schedule, then caps each individual at two proposals per year counting PI, co-PI and senior/key personnel roles. Materials caps at one. Physics, math, astronomy, geosciences and biology cap at none. Here is the full quota map across all seven new core solicitations, why the senior-personnel clause is the trap, and how to allocate a quota you did not know you had.
