Community Science Program is sponsored by DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI). The Community Science Program provides the scientific community with access to high-throughput sequencing and other resources at the JGI for projects relevant to Department of Energy missions.

Community Science Program | Joint Genome Institute Community Science Program The Community Science Program (CSP) provides the scientific community at large with access to high-throughput sequencing, synthesis, and metabolomics at the JGI for projects of relevance to Department of Energy (DOE) Mission Areas . Through this program, the DOE aims to advance genome science-based scientific research from a broad range of disciplines.

Three calls fall under the umbrella of our CSP: The Large Scale call is for expansive projects that leverage a range of JGI capabilities, and also requires a Letter of Intent. The New Investigator call is for PIs who have never led a JGI project, and the Functional Genomics call is for projects that translate genomic information into biological function. The New Investigator and Functional Genomics calls do not require an LOI.

Projects will be chosen based on scientific merit, judged through independent peer review, and evaluated based on their DOE relevance. For accepted proposals, sequencing, synthesis, metabolomics and analysis will be performed by the JGI at no cost to the user. What happens after I submit?

All proposals first undergo technical review by JGI staff, while the DOE ensures that they meet DOE mission relevance . During scientific peer review , proposals are evaluated and placed in rank order by the reviewers. The ranked proposal list, along with a recommendation from JGI management, is then forwarded to DOE for final approval.

Following DOE approval, project managers and JGI scientific and technical staff negotiate proposal details with the PI and proposing team. The work plan is formalized in a Statement of Work document. At the completion of a project, the JGI makes the assemblies, gene annotations, and analyses available to the community at large.

CSP Functional Genomics Call [OPEN] The CSP Functional Genomics call is to enable users to perform state-of-the-art functional genomics research and to help them translate genomic information into biological function.

The emphasis is on projects leveraging JGI’s DNA synthesis and omics capabilities CSP New Investigator Call [OPEN] The CSP New Investigator Call targets investigators and research initiatives new to the JGI, with an emphasis on providing pilot data to assess feasibility of a novel approach or form the foundation for a large-scale CSP proposal submission.

[CLOSED] The JGI’s CSP Large Scale Call is focused on genomic science projects that address questions of relevance to DOE’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research program. Priority will be given to projects that address the areas of special emphasis that are listed in the call and leverage the diversity of JGI technical and analytical capabilities.

There is an additional internal review process for any sequences submitted for DNA Synthesis.
