Applicants collectively requested more than €8.
2 billion in grant funding, reflecting the growing demand for support for ambitious, high-risk and potentially transformative research projects. Compared to the previous year, the number of submitted proposals increased once again, continuing the upward trend observed in recent editions of the programme and underlining the strategic importance of the EIC Pathfinder instrument within the European innovation ecosystem.
The scale of participation also highlights the highly competitive nature of the programme. The call received: 12 399 beneficiary participations 4 633 unique beneficiary organisations The sustained level of interest demonstrates that the EIC Pathfinder programme remains highly attractive to Europe’s research community, despite the very competitive success rates of previous years.
It also reflects the continued appetite for funding visionary research with the potential to create entirely new technological pathways. The EIC Pathfinder Open 2026 call has an indicative budget of €166 million. The evaluation process is now underway, with results expected to be announced in October 2026.
The EIC Pathfinder supports visionary ideas for radically new technologies. It promotes high-risk/high-gain, interdisciplinary collaborations focused on early-stage technology development (Technology Readiness Levels 1–3), up to proof of concept. The European Innovation Council Pathfinder Challenge DeepRAP (Deep Reasoning, Abstraction, and Planning) funds breakthrough research in cognitive AI at the earliest technology readiness levels (TRL 1-3). Awards of up to EUR 4 million support projects exploring fundamental advances in AI reasoning, abstraction, and planning capabilities that go beyond current pattern-recognition approaches. The challenge seeks research into AI systems capable of genuine logical reasoning, abstract thought, hierarchical planning, and transfer learning across domains — capabilities that current large language models and deep learning systems struggle to achieve reliably. Projects should propose novel architectures, algorithms, or theoretical frameworks that could enable AI systems to reason about novel situations, form and manipulate abstract concepts, and plan complex multi-step strategies. Like other EIC Pathfinder challenges, this programme does not require large consortia, making it accessible to individual researchers, small teams, and startups. The deadline is October 28, 2026.

Awards of up to EUR 4 million support projects exploring how AI can be physically embedded into robotic systems to achieve truly autonomous behavior in unstructured real-world environments. The challenge focuses on embodied intelligence — AI systems that learn and adapt through physical interaction with their environment rather than purely through data-driven approaches. Unlike most EU programmes, the EIC Pathfinder does not require large consortia, making it accessible to individual researchers, small university teams, and startups pursuing breakthrough concepts. This ARPA-style programme emphasizes high-risk, high-reward research that could fundamentally reshape autonomous robotics. The deadline is October 28, 2026.
