Gates, Sr. moved to Colorado in 1904 and found success in the rubber industry, cattle ranches, real estate, trucking, electronics, mutual funds, and other business ventures. Hazel was his wife, and John was his brother.
Based in Denver, the foundation “promotes excellence, innovation, and self-sufficiency in public education, healthy lifestyles, community enrichment, connection to nature, and stewardship of the state’s natural inheritance. ” GFF funds local education, environment, and community efforts. Grants for K-12 and Higher Education The foundation invests in the educational needs of all children in Colorado.
Its education programs seeks to strengthen the quality and equity in Colorado’s public education system. Education grants are available across all funding programs, which include Capital Grants, Strategic Grants and Impact Investments. Education funding priorities include support for autonomous school and innovative learning; school system innovation; and increasing educator diversity while supporting effective state education policies.

Grants for Community Development and Housing The community development focus area prioritizes communities that have “historically been excluded from decision-making power or faced barriers to accessing opportunity, such as low-income residents and Black, Indigenous, Latino/a, and other communities of color. ” This program invests in solutions that build a more equitable economy in Colorado, and advance economic mobility.
Funding priority is given to community-led efforts that create and preserve affordable housing, address growth and change, build community assets, and promote a more climate-sustainable future for Colorado communities. Recent grantees include Elevation Community Land Trust, Sober Apartment Living and the Denver Housing Authority, among several others.
Grants for Environmental Conservation, Sustainable Agriculture, and Climate Change While much of this funder’s giving considers how climate change effects Colorado from a variety of perspectives, the natural resources focus area supports “collaborative work with a cross-section of partners and fellow funders to conserve Colorado’s unique landscapes, waterways, and agricultural communities in ways that allow both natural and human systems to thrive.
” Funding priorities include balanced water management; forest health and water restoration; and landscape conservation and land trust capacity building. Recent grantees include the National Forest Foundation, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Ecosystem Integrity Fund V, among others.
Grants for Civic Engagement, Democracy and Media Ultimately, funding seeks to fill civic news gaps by supporting organizations that report on urgent issues in education, natural resources, and community development. Funding priorities include evolving and strengthening the civics news ecosystem; addressing gaps in civic new coverage; and building inclusive news leadership and voices.
Recent grantees include the National Trust for Local News, Colorado Media Project, and the Denver Press Club, among others. Grants range between about $5,000 and $1 million. In a recent year, this funder gave about $40 million in grants with $430 to $458 million in assets.
