Humanity AI is a 500,000,000 dollar, five-year pooled fund launched in October 2025 by ten major U.S. foundations, co-led by the MacArthur Foundation, the Ford Foundation and Omidyar Network, to mobilise civil society in shaping how artificial intelligence develops. It is the largest coordinated philanthropic commitment on AI to date.
Partner-aligned grantmaking began in autumn 2025 and grants from the pooled fund itself began in 2026, with Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors serving as fiscal sponsor.
This record covers the fund's first open call for grants, which directs 10,000,000 dollars to community-led projects across three issue areas: education, shaping AI around student and educator interests while safeguarding against risks; labor and economy, ensuring AI enhances rather than replaces work and creates inclusive economic opportunity; and the humanities, arts and culture, enhancing creativity while protecting artists' work.
The call is notable for two features that distinguish it from most AI philanthropy. First, it explicitly invites applicants who have not typically seen themselves as having a role in shaping AI, naming workers, students, scholars and artists as the constituencies it wants leading proposals, which signals a lower bar on prior AI technical credentials than most AI funds.
Second, the fund gives priority consideration to projects using open-weight or open-source AI models over closed-weight models, which is a substantive technical constraint that should shape proposal design rather than a preference to be noted in passing.

Or search similar grants →According to the current listing, eligibility includes: Applicants must be U.S.-based nonprofit organizations, specifically 501(c)(3) organizations or collaborations with a 501(c)(3) lead applicant. Individuals, for-profit companies and non-U.S. organizations are not eligible to lead, though a collaboration structure allows unincorporated community groups and individual workers, students, scholars or artists to participate through a 501(c)(3) fiscal lead, which is the practical route for the grassroots constituencies the fund says it wants to reach. Projects must align with one of the three named issue areas: education, labor and economy, or the humanities, arts and culture. The fund gives priority consideration to projects using open-weight or open-source AI models rather than closed-weight models, so a proposal built on a proprietary commercial API is at a stated disadvantage and applicants should either design around open models or explain explicitly why a closed model is necessary. Humanity AI states it is actively inviting applicants who have not typically seen themselves as having a role in shaping AI, which suggests that deep prior AI technical expertise is not a prerequisite and that lived experience and community legitimacy carry weight; proposals that read as consultancy-led technology projects rather than community-led efforts are likely to be mismatched. Applications are submitted at humanityai.ai/open-call and the deadline is 21 October 2026 at 7:59 PM Eastern Time. An informational webinar was held on 14 September 2026 and a recording is available, which prospective applicants should watch given how little written guidance the fund has published on award sizes and review criteria. Confirm the full requirements in the official notice before applying.
The current listing shows the open call will direct 10,000,000 US dollars to community-led projects. Humanity AI has not published an individual grant size range, a floor or a ceiling for this call, so amount_min and amount_max are both recorded as 10,000,000, which is the size of the open call pool rather than an individual award. This is the single most important caveat on this record: an applicant should not budget 10,000,000 dollars. For calibration on what the coalition's awards actually look like, Humanity AI's inaugural round distributed 8,000,000 dollars to a small group of organizations, and MacArthur's separate but aligned 10,000,000 dollars of AI grantmaking was made as eight grants ranging from 500,000 dollars (Data and Society Research Institute, Human Rights Data Analysis Group) to 2,000,000 dollars (AI Now Institute, Brookings Institution, London School of Economics). Those were institutional grants to established policy and research organizations, however, whereas this open call is explicitly aimed at community-led projects and at applicants who have not typically seen themselves as having a role in shaping AI, so award sizes should be expected to be materially smaller. If the 10,000,000 dollar pool is spread across several dozen community organizations, individual grants plausibly fall in the tens to low hundreds of thousands of dollars, but this is inference rather than published guidance. Verify award ceilings, matching requirements, and allowable costs in the official notice.

The Foresight Institute's AI for Science and Safety Nodes request for proposals funds work at the intersection of accelerating science with AI and making AI systems safe, and it is structured less like a conventional grant than like admission to a research hub. Successful applicants receive a cash grant, typically 30,000 to 100,000 US dollars, together with access to a private compute cluster and office space at Foresight's San Francisco or Berlin nodes. Three focus areas are named: Local Compute, concerning decentralised and locally-run AI capability; Coordination and Accountability, covering mechanisms such as AI insurance and open governance; and AI-First Science across biology, neuroscience and nanotechnology. The programme is deliberately open to individuals, teams and organisations, both non-profit and for-profit, which makes it one of the few credible funding routes for unaffiliated researchers and very small teams working on AI safety and AI-for-science questions that fall outside university and large-foundation structures. Two conditions shape what the award is good for: overhead is capped at 10 per cent of direct research costs, which effectively rules out hosting the work inside a high-indirect-rate university, and all work products including code, data and outputs must be open source. Selection prioritises applicants who will be active in-person contributors at the physical nodes. The application deadline is 31 October 2026 at 23:59 Pacific time, which makes this one of the few AI safety opportunities currently open.
Path to a Cure Research Grant is a grant from Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that funds basic science research aimed at restoring CFTR protein function or developing gene-based approaches to treat cystic fibrosis. The program specifically targets projects proposing restoration of CFTR protein function or approaches to fix or replace the defective CFTR gene. Awards provide up to $150,000 per year (plus 12% indirect costs) for up to two years, with grants competitively renewable for additional funding. Eligible applicants are independent investigators at for-profit and nonprofit institutions. Proposals must be hypothesis-driven with sufficient preliminary data. The fall cycle deadline is November 15, 2026.
Humanity AI — a collaborative of ten funders including Ford, MacArthur, Mellon, and Mozilla — announced more than $18M to align AI with democratic values. $8M went to 12 invited grantees at $500K each; a $10M open call launches summer 2026. Here is who got funded, what the money signals, and how mission-aligned nonprofits should position for the open round.
Read articleThe ten-foundation Humanity AI collaborative opened applications September 10, 2026, with an October 21 deadline, three funding tiers from $75,000 to $1 million, and a Lever for Change two-phase review. Its out-of-scope list eliminates AI literacy training, AI adoption, and research-only projects. Here is what actually qualifies.
