The International Development Association (IDA), a part of the World Bank, plays a crucial role in supporting low-income countries by providing grants and concessional loans. IDA combines financing with exceptional knowledge and research to help countries reduce poverty, stimulate economic growth, and improve people’s living conditions.
Established in 1960, IDA serves as a lifeline for 78 countries and is the largest provider of essential social services in these countries. IDA has been a trusted partner for low-income countries and a pioneer in tackling some of the most complex global challenges. Hundreds of millions of people have escaped poverty through job creation, access to clean water, schools, roads, nutrition, electricity, and more.
IDA puts countries in driver’s seat in pursuing a sustainable path toward funding their own development. Thirty-five countries no longer borrow from IDA, including some of the world’s most dynamic economies: China, India, South Korea, and Vietnam. The journey of these countries is a testament to the effectiveness of IDA’s approach.
