Frontier AI Discovery is Innovate UK's flagship attempt to move British frontier AI research from feasibility into deployment at scale, and it is structured as a two-stage funnel where Phase 1 is essentially an audition for a very large Phase 2 cheque.
Phase 1 asks UK registered organisations to produce a short feasibility study - up to three months, 25,000 to 50,000 pounds - whose central deliverable is a credible feasibility and technical proposal for Phase 2. Phase 2 then commits at least 50,000,000 pounds, with individual projects receiving 5,000,000 to 10,000,000 pounds over 24 to 32 months.
That ratio matters when deciding whether to apply: the Phase 1 grant does not cover meaningful research, it covers the work of proving you could do the research.
Proposals must address one of four themes - AI-enabled health and life sciences (drug discovery, clinical trials, predictive healthcare), advanced materials with AI (aerospace, net zero, defence, semiconductors), secure AI for national security and defence, or fundamental AI (foundation models, reasoning, explainability).
The bar on novelty is explicit: projects must demonstrate new-to-world AI innovation with defensible intellectual property, which rules out applied integration work and incremental tooling. The competition opened 14 April 2026 and closed 10 June 2026 at 11:00am UK time, with Phase 1 projects required to start by 1 October 2026 and end by 31 January 2027 - a tight window that signals Phase 2 selection follows almost immediately.
