Innovation & Catalyst Grants (MITO2i) is sponsored by MITO2i (Mitochondrial Innovation Initiative). MITO2i Innovation Grants fund impactful projects that bring novel ways to transform mitochondrial health and have a direct impact on the quality of life of patients with mitochondrial disease or dysfunction.

Current Opportunities | Mito2i MITO2i supports interdisciplinary research through calls for proposals for Innovation Grants, Post-doctoral Fellowships, and Graduate Student Scholarships. By supporting these diverse projects, MITO2i has fostered collaboration between disciplines and facilitated partnerships across institutions, including UofT and its affiliated hospitals, as well as international collaborations.

This interdisciplinary approach has been instrumental in driving impactful research and advancing our understanding of mitochondria in various fields of study. Involving and engaging people affected by mitochondrial and/or other chronic diseases affected by mitochondrial dysfunction, for example patients and families, is a priority to MITO2i.

This helps to ensure that research we fund is rooted in what matters to patients and families; gives a platform for them to be heard; improves research quality; and values patients and families as experts on disease by experience.

INNOVATION & CATALYST GRANTS The MITO2i Innovation Grants, Post-doctoral Fellowships and Graduate Student Scholarships are to fund impactful projects that brings novel ways to transform mitochondrial health and be able to have a direct impact on the quality of life of patients with mitochondrial disease or dysfunction.

The objective of the Innovation grants is to generate new knowledge, promoting innovation and interdisciplinary research.

MITO2i will invest in bold interdisciplinary ideas, ranging from basic (e.g. fundamental biological concepts) to clinical and translational research (diagnostic and novel treatments for mitochondrial dysfunction) and health policy, economics, law and ethics and epidemiology, to cultivate new concepts that are expected to be of critical importance to mitochondrial medicine and research.

Scholarship & Fellowship Grants Aimed at training the next generation to maintain cross-cutting research, build momentum, and generate strong, sustainable research capacity in Canada for mitochondrial medicine. MITO2i has launched its 2023 Graduate Student Scholarships for all levels of graduate students working in areas of mitochondrial research.

MITO2i is also pleased to announce a new call for graduate student PhD Exchanges between the University of Toronto and the Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research at Newcastle University in partnership with MITACS Global link.
