"NERC Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Environmental Science Phase One for Environmental Hazards, Terrestrial Ecology, and Oceans and Climate" is currently closed and not accepting applications.
This is NERC's first dedicated push to put modern AI methods into environmental science, and the scope is unusually well-specified for a phase-one call. Three challenge areas are named. Environmental hazards and human health covers air quality, flooding, droughts, heat stress and wildfires, with an emphasis on predictive systems and impact assessment tools.
Terrestrial ecology asks for data science and AI that provide insights into ecosystem and biodiversity changes, detect and attribute causes to those changes, and prioritise and plan conservation efforts - the attribution requirement is the hard part and the one that distinguishes a serious proposal from a monitoring pipeline.
Oceans and climate targets sustainable ocean management and climate resilience, including understanding and predicting complex weather and ocean patterns, algorithms for ocean data analysis, multi-modal models and prediction of extreme events. The eighteen-month duration and GBP 200,000 to GBP 400,000 FEC range signal what this call is for: proving a method works on a real environmental problem, not building a long-term programme.
Phase one framing implies a subsequent phase, so a credible pathway from an eighteen-month demonstrator to scaled deployment is worth stating explicitly. Participation limits are tight and easy to trip over - an applicant may lead no more than one application and participate in at most two overall, and no more than four applications are permitted per lead organisation, so large departments must coordinate internally before writing.
Overseas organisations are generally ineligible, with narrow exceptions for Norwegian co-leads and IIASA, and PhD studentships cannot be funded. The deadline was 11 December 2025 at 4:00 PM UK time, with funded projects starting 1 October 2026.

Or search similar grants →According to the current listing, eligibility includes: Applicants must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for NERC funding and must meet UKRI individual eligibility requirements. The call supports research groups and individuals at any career stage. Participation limits apply: an applicant may lead no more than one application and may participate in a maximum of two applications overall, and no more than four applications are permitted per lead organisation. Overseas organisations are generally ineligible to receive funding, with limited exceptions permitting Norwegian co-leads and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). PhD studentships are not fundable through this opportunity. Projects run for 18 months and must start on 1 October 2026. Individual awards are GBP 200,000 to GBP 400,000 at full economic cost, funded by UKRI at 80 percent FEC, from a total fund of GBP 4,800,000. Proposals must address one of three challenge areas: environmental hazards and human health, covering air quality, flooding, droughts, heat stress and wildfires through predictive systems and impact assessment tools; terrestrial ecology, using data science and AI to provide insights into ecosystem and biodiversity changes, detect and attribute causes, and prioritise and plan conservation efforts; or oceans and climate, covering sustainable ocean management and climate resilience including weather and ocean pattern prediction, ocean data analysis algorithms, multi-modal models and extreme event prediction. The deadline was 11 December 2025 at 4:00 PM UK time and has passed. Because this is designated phase one, applicants should monitor the UKRI opportunity page for a phase two call and confirm all eligibility rules, FEC treatment and participation limits directly with NERC. Confirm the full requirements in the official notice before applying.
The current listing shows the total fund is GBP 4,800,000. Individual projects are GBP 200,000 to GBP 400,000 at full economic cost, of which UKRI funds 80 percent - so the actual cash received is roughly GBP 160,000 to GBP 320,000 with the host organisation absorbing the remainder. Converted at prevailing exchange rates the FEC range is approximately USD 260,000 to USD 520,000, and amount_min and amount_max are set to those figures. The 80 percent FEC rule is not a technicality: a team budgeting to the GBP 400,000 ceiling must confirm its institution will cover the 20 percent balance before committing. Verify award ceilings, matching requirements, and allowable costs in the official notice.
The published deadline was December 11, 2025, which has passed. Check the official notice for any future application windows before investing time in a proposal.

The NSF CISE Future Computing Research (Future CoRe) program supports research in computing and communication foundations, intelligent systems, and network systems. The program funds innovative research that advances the frontiers of computing including artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics. This is one of NSF's largest computing research programs with $280 million in total budget. Projects can address fundamental computing challenges, novel AI architectures, scalable intelligent systems, and next-generation network infrastructure.
The FY2026 Bus Safety, Accessibility, and Innovation Research Program closes September 28. Universities, agencies, and startups are all eligible to lead — but every team must include a transit vehicle manufacturer in a prominent role, and FTA already cancelled a nearly identical NOFO in 2024 without making a single award.
Read articleThe FY2026 Agriculture Innovation Center Demonstration Program posted September 9 with a January 31, 2027 deadline. It is the first competition under a rule codified in 2024, the award floor is $600,000, and the single most common way to lose is to upload your application to Grants.gov.

Congress rescinded $850 million, NTIA canceled Round 3, and what remains is a $53 million final round pointed at AI-native radio access networks — with a $25 million per-project ceiling, a mandatory 50 percent cost share, and rolling awards beginning this fall.
