According to the ESD, this competitive initiative offers grants of up to $1 million to recruit and retain exceptional translational researchers, whose innovations could lead to transformative advancements in medical treatments and technologies.

ESD President Hope Knight emphasized the program's role in boosting New York's innovation economy and attracting world-class research talent, which is critical for commercializing scientific breakthroughs. " Recruitment of leading translational researchers strengthens our life science ecosystem by creating opportunities for commercialization that will foster long-term economic growth across the state ."

The application window is now open and will remain so on a rolling basis until 5 p. m. on July 16, 2027, with guidelines available on the ESD website .

For this round, the evaluation criteria have been updated to prioritize translational research with significant commercialization potential, such as patents, spinoffs and licensing opportunities. These changes reinforce New York's commitment to fostering new technologies and supporting related company formations, thereby enhancing the state's innovation-driven economy.

The grants can cover various research-related expenses for the hired investigators, as specified in the program guidelines , said the ESD. Since its inception in 2018, NYFIRST has granted 13 awards to medical schools and has contributed to the creation of over 200 jobs, with a considerable number of these hires coming from outside New York State. Recruited researchers have secured approximately $32.

6 million in funding from their previous institutions and have attracted an additional $119. 7 million in external research funding. Moreover, this initiative aligns with New York State's broader $620 million Life Science Initiative , which aims to position the state as a leader in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and biomedical innovation.
