The National Institute on Aging's Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratories (AITC) program promotes the development and implementation of AI approaches and technology for aging and Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias (ADRD) research. The program supports P30 Center Core awards that serve as collaborative hubs bringing together AI/ML researchers, clinicians, and aging scientists to develop AI tools for cognitive impairment identification, prediction of disease trajectories, and optimization of care delivery for older adults. A companion U24 Coordinating Center award supports cross-site coordination, shared infrastructure, and standardized evaluation frameworks. NIA committed $21.5 million total in FY 2026 across both the P30 (RFA-AG-26-006) and U24 (RFA-AG-26-007) mechanisms. While the current application cycle has closed, the AITC continues as an active multi-year program with potential for future funding opportunities.
BRAIN Initiative Connectivity across Scales (BRAIN CONNECTS): Comprehensive Centers for Mouse Brain (UM1 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) is sponsored by National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institutes of Health. This program supports the development of a complete synapse-level brain map (connectome) using serial-section electron microscopy pipelines that can scale to a whole mouse brain. It aims to integrate knowledge about the brain's wiring diagram with cell type composition and gene expression data. The program emphasizes improving existing pipelines, developing critical technologies, and standardizing protocols for whole mouse brain staining and automated serial sectioning.
PA-27-037 consolidates the Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Transition Award into a single parent announcement across 20 NIH components, with the next deadline December 8, 2026. The eligibility gate is not the science — it is a mandatory change of institution and mentor between the F99 and K00 phases.
Read articleA draft executive order would have put OMB Director Russell Vought on a commission with final say over NIH awards after peer review. Sen. Collins killed it by pointing at a provision Congress already passed. Here is what the episode teaches applicants about the December 11 cliff.
Read articlePA-27-034, PA-27-035 and PA-27-036 replace the institute-specific R25 announcements that research education programs have been built around for a decade. NCI, NIDA and NIGMS have already expired theirs early. Here is what the consolidation actually changes: an 8% indirect cost ceiling, a US-citizens-and-permanent-residents participant rule, a cooperative agreement variant that only exists on one of the three, and no clinical-trial-allowed companion anywhere.
