ASCR Applied Mathematics | U.S. DOE Office of Science (SC) ASCR Applied Mathematics supports basic research leading to fundamental mathematical advances and computational breakthroughs across DOE and SC missions.
Basic research in scalable algorithms and mathematical libraries, multiscale and multi-physics modeling, scientific AI , and efficient analysis of massive data sets underpin all of DOE’s computational and data-intensive science efforts.
Key activities include support for foundational research in: Multiscale modeling and multiphysics coupling Advanced solvers for large-scale linear and nonlinear systems of equations Methods that use asynchrony or randomness Uncertainty quantification Mathematical methods for scientific AI Advances in such methods have historically contributed as much, if not more, to gains in computational science than hardware improvements alone.
Forward-looking efforts by applied-mathematics research anticipate DOE mission needs from the closer coupling and integration of scientific modeling, data, and scientific AI with advanced computing.
These efforts enable greater capabilities for scientific discovery, design, and decision-support in complex systems and new algorithms to support data analysis at the edge of experiments and instruments and protect the privacy of sensitive datasets.

The Trump administration committed $5B and 278 projects across 15+ agencies to the Genesis Mission. Here's the structure — and how to position for the next wave.
Read articleOn July 22, 2026, the White House announced more than $5 billion in federal commitments for the Genesis Mission — the Department of Energy-led national initiative to fuse AI, exascale computing, and the 17 national labs into a single scientific platform. Nearly 300 projects across all 50 states were selected from a historic Request for Applications, and 15-plus agencies are now attaching funding to a set of National Science and Technology Challenges. Here is what the Genesis Mission is, how the money is structured, and the concrete on-ramps for researchers, universities, and small businesses who were not in the first cohort.
Read articleDOE's FY2026 Office of Science open-call solicitation (DE-FOA-0003600) makes roughly $500 million available across about 500 awards of $50,000 to $5 million — across computing, physics, chemistry, biology, fusion, and isotopes — with a rolling window that stays open through September 30, 2026. Unlike a targeted NOFO, it lets investigators propose almost anything within the agency's mission. Here is how the open call actually works, why it is chronically underused, and how to write into it.
