S-process (Speculative Grantmaking) is a grant from the Survival and Flourishing Fund that funds organizations and individuals working on long-term human survival and flourishing, particularly in areas related to existential risk and AI safety. The program uses a structured algorithm-based review process involving 4 to 12 independent Recommenders who evaluate funding applications in periodic grant rounds.
To be eligible for a full S-Process grant round, applicants must first receive a Speculation Grant from SFF. Applications may be submitted at any time and are reviewed when a grant round is convened. Award amounts vary depending on the applicant's proposed work.

S-Process | Survival and Flourishing Fund The following funding application may be submitted at any time: SFF Funding Rolling Application Applications will be reviewed when a S-Process Grant Round is organized to review them, as announced on the SFF homepage. Applicants must be awarded a Speculation Grant in order to be guaranteed eligibility for consideration in an SFF S-Process Grant Round.

For reviewing funding applications, the SFF team uses an algorithm along with a recurring meeting structure that we call “The S-Process”, co-developed by Andrew Critch, Jaan Tallinn, Oliver Habryka, Kevin Arlin, and Jason Moggridge.
“S” stands for “Simulation”, because we use a grant-making simulation app to aid in discussions and final decisions. SFF’s current S-Process implementation is managed by Survival and Flourishing Corp .
In each S-Process Grant Round, our Funders agree on a set of four to twelve “Recommenders” to read the incoming grant applications, and the Recommenders and Funders work together on our grant recommendation app over a series of meetings until SFF’s final recommended grant amounts are decided. Funders always have final say over whether to implement our recommendations.
