Moreover, DHS S&T strongly supports the development of a workforce that reflects the population of the United States of America. Applications are sought from qualified Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to establish homeland security scientific leadership programs in areas critical to homeland security.
The SLA program includes coordinated teaching and research experience initiatives, curriculum development, mentoring and undergraduate scholarships. DHS expects SLA recipients to establish collaborative relationships with the Homeland Security University Centers of Excellence (COEs), DHS Laboratories, other government laboratories and private sector labs engaged in homeland security research and development.
This includes developing long term relationships and establishing internship venues (see http://www. dhs. gov/xres/labs/).
The SLA program provides incentives for MSIs to hire qualified early-career faculty with the intention that these faculty build an enduring HS-STEM program. SLA programs are for building curricula and developing strategies to advance faculty and students to the next phase of their professional careers in homeland security research and development.
Potential education activities related to the homeland security research areas could include: designing innovative HS-STEM courses or curricula; supporting academic enhancement including adapting effective educational materials and practices developed elsewhere; incorporating examples of HS-STEM technology research development and application activities into undergraduate courses; and implementing innovative methods for evaluation and assessment of program effectiveness.
Research and education areas eligible for support include: (1) Explosives Detection, Mitigation and Response; (2) Social and Behavioral Sciences; (3) Risk, Economics, and Decision Sciences; (4) Human Factors; (5) Chemical Threats and Countermeasures; (6) Biological Threats and Countermeasures; (7) Food and Agriculture Security; (8) Transportation Security; (9) Border Security; (10) Immigration Studies; (11) Maritime and Port Security; (12) Infrastructure Protection; (13) Natural Disasters and Related Geophysical Studies; (14) Emergency Preparedness and Response; (15) Communications and Interoperability; (16) Advanced Data Analysis and Visualization.
