About This Grant
Structural Engineers Foundation Research Grant is sponsored by Structural Engineers Foundation. Provides grants for graduate research in structural engineering design at universities. This program should be reviewed carefully against your organization's mission, staffing capacity, timeline, and compliance readiness before you commit resources to a full application. Strong submissions usually translate sponsor priorities into concrete objectives, clear implementation milestones, and measurable public benefit.
For planning purposes, treat rolling deadlines or periodic funding windows as your working submission target unless the sponsor publishes an updated notice. A competitive project plan should include a documented need statement, implementation approach, evaluation framework, risk controls, and a realistic budget narrative. Even when a grant allows broad program design, reviewers still expect credible evidence that the proposed work can be executed within the grant period and with appropriate accountability.
Current published award information indicates $10,000 - $50,000 Organizations should verify the final funding range, matching requirements, and allowability rules directly in the official opportunity materials before preparing a budget. Finance and program teams should align early so direct costs, indirect costs, staffing assumptions, procurement timelines, and reporting obligations all remain consistent throughout drafting and post-award administration.
Eligibility guidance for this opportunity is: Universities with structural engineering programs If your organization has partnerships, subrecipients, or collaborators, define responsibilities and compliance ownership before submission. Reviewers often look for implementation credibility, so letters of commitment, prior performance evidence, and a clear governance model can materially strengthen the application narrative and reduce concerns about delivery risk.
A practical approach is to begin with a focused readiness review, then build a workback schedule from the sponsor deadline. Confirm required attachments, registration dependencies, and internal approval checkpoints early. This reduces last-minute issues and improves submission quality. For the most accurate requirements, always rely on the official notice and primary source links associated with Structural Engineers Foundation Research Grant.

____________________________________________________________ Congratulations to Lilli Webb , the recipient of this year's SEF Research Grant. Lilli Webb is a graduate student at Lawrence Technological University, currently pursuing an integrated five-year baccalaureate-master’s degree in Architectural Engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering.
Her research addresses a critical gap in the current AISC specification, ANSI/AISC 360-22, which requires the analysis of flange bending and weld strength limit states separately. Under the mentorship of Dr.
Keith Kowalkowski and based on the foundation of a previous student, Javier Alvarez Rodilla, Lilli is conducting experimental testing in LTU’s Structural Testing Lab to further evaluate the interaction of flange bending on the reduced weld capacity when steel members are subjected to concentrated loads from plate elements.
In general, previous analytical research has shown that flange bending has a significant influence on non-uniform stresses that develop in the welds. Lilli’s goal is to derive a new analysis procedure/equations that better demonstrate this behavior in comparison to Equations J10-1 and J2-4 in ANSI/AISC 360-22 using new experimental testing and previous analytical.
The test matrix will study various weld sizes, beam sizes, and weld types (fillet vs. penetration). The work seeks to ensure the safety and integrity of steel wide-flange members in structural design and reduce the use of excess stiffener usage due to the flange bending limit state resulting in an overly conservative result.
SEF Research Grant Application Form The Structural Engineers Foundation (SEF) is proud to offer a grant to partially fund research efforts in structural engineering or related fields for the 2025-2026 academic year. The SEF recognizes the importance of research to the future of the structural engineering field and profession and offers this grant to provide assistance in a selected research endeavor.
____________________________________________________________ SEF Scholarship Application Form The Foundation strongly believes that the future of structural engineering depends on today's students. Without them and their vision, there literally is no future for our profession.
