UKRI has opened a 12,050,000 pound call for speculative, high-risk research aimed at a step change in the sustainability of future AI systems, covering innovation across the whole AI stack rather than any single layer.
In scope are energy-efficient algorithms, hardware-software co-design, and AI systems designed to operate under real resource constraints, alongside work that addresses the environmental, social and economic sustainability impacts running through the AI value chain.
The framing is notable for treating sustainability as broader than energy per training run: proposals are expected to engage with impacts across the value chain rather than optimising a single benchmark metric. As with the companion explainable AI call, UKRI states it is funding speculative and high-risk research with the potential to deliver high rewards, so incremental efficiency gains over existing baselines are unlikely to compete.
Awards run up to 24 months with a fixed start of 1 February 2027 and a ceiling of 602,500 pounds full economic cost at 80 percent UKRI funding. Eligible roles explicitly include research technical professionals, which opens the call to systems and infrastructure specialists who are often excluded from conventional research grants. The deadline is 10 November 2026 at 4:00pm UK time, with a webinar held on 16 September 2026.

Eligible roles explicitly include research technical professionals as well as conventional academic staff, which is a deliberate widening and is worth noting for teams whose core expertise sits in systems engineering, compilers or hardware rather than in a standard lectureship. International researchers may participate only as project co-leads under specific existing UKRI cooperation agreements. Projects run up to 24 months and must start on 1 February 2027, a fixed date that constrains recruitment planning. UKRI funds 80 percent of full economic cost up to a 602,500 pound ceiling, with the host organisation covering the remaining 20 percent. UKRI states it welcomes applications below the maximum, so budget size is not itself a signal of competitiveness. Proposals must target sustainability across the AI stack and engage with environmental, social and economic impacts along the value chain; a narrow efficiency benchmark improvement without that wider framing is a poor fit. Applications go through the UKRI Funding Service by 10 November 2026 at 4:00pm UK time, with earlier institutional internal deadlines. Confirm the full requirements in the official notice before applying.
The current listing shows the maximum request is 602,500 pounds at full economic cost with UKRI funding 80 percent, giving a maximum UKRI contribution of 482,000 pounds and leaving 20 percent to the host organisation. At roughly 1.31 US dollars to the pound, amount_min reflects the UKRI cash portion at about 632,000 US dollars and amount_max the full economic cost ceiling at about 790,000 US dollars. The total fund is 12,050,000 pounds, roughly 15.8 million US dollars, supporting on the order of twenty projects at the ceiling. UKRI publishes no minimum and explicitly welcomes smaller applications, which matters here because a strong hardware-software co-design pilot or a focused algorithmic efficiency study can be credible at a fraction of the cap and competes on ambition rather than budget size. Verify award ceilings, matching requirements, and allowable costs in the official notice.

The FY2026 Bus Safety, Accessibility, and Innovation Research Program closes September 28. Universities, agencies, and startups are all eligible to lead — but every team must include a transit vehicle manufacturer in a prominent role, and FTA already cancelled a nearly identical NOFO in 2024 without making a single award.
Read articleThe FY2026 Agriculture Innovation Center Demonstration Program posted September 9 with a January 31, 2027 deadline. It is the first competition under a rule codified in 2024, the award floor is $600,000, and the single most common way to lose is to upload your application to Grants.gov.
Read articleThe Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund started at $1.5 billion for open RAN. Congress rescinded $850 million, NTIA canceled Round 3, and what remains is a $53 million final round pointed at AI-native radio access networks — with a $25 million per-project ceiling, a mandatory 50 percent cost share, and rolling awards beginning this fall.
