9 million euros with the aim of promoting scientific projects led by new research talent and with an impact on the city The Barcelona City Council, through the Department of Science and Innovation , has opened the 2026 call for Young and Emerging Research Subsidies , an initiative that aims to strengthen the scientific fabric of the city and promote research talent in the early stages of its career. With a global endowment of 1.
9 million euros for the years 2026 and 2027 , this line of funding promotes research and knowledge transfer projects with a direct impact in Barcelona. The call aims to support emerging research , generate innovative solutions for urban challenges , and facilitate the consolidation of scientific trajectories in the city.
It also incorporates specific measures to promote equity in the research career, especially in relation to care tasks. Strategic areas and city challenges The projects presented must be framed in one of the three main thematic areas defined, which at the same time incorporate several scientific challenges: Life and Health Sciences : advanced therapies; digital health; community health; social determinants of health.
Technological innovation and the city : chips and semiconductors; artificial intelligence; quantum technologies; ethics and technological humanism. Sustainability and climate change : climate emergency; responsible food and consumption; green and blue economy in the city; urban and social resilience.
The call adopts a broad vision of science, which includes all branches of knowledge -from the experimental sciences to the humanities-, and is committed to interdisciplinary projects that provide scientific evidence and solutions applicable to the local and metropolitan reality .
The projects must have a maximum duration of two years , be developed in the city of Barcelona and incorporate aspects such as the gender perspective, environmental sustainability, and the effective transfer of knowledge to society. Universities, research centres, health institutions and other non-profit organisations with R+D+I activities and presence in Barcelona or its metropolitan area can apply for these grants.
Applications must be submitted by legal entities, which will designate a principal investigator (IP) with an emerging profile – with the doctorate obtained from 2019 – and the support of one or two tutors.
Each project will be able to receive up to a maximum of 80,000 euros , with a coverage of up to 80% of the total cost , and will be evaluated on a competitive basis according to criteria of scientific quality, viability and social impact. The deadline for submitting applications is 40 calendar days from the day following the publication of the call in the Official Gazette of the Province of Barcelona (BOPB) .
