Philanthropy Northwest Network Call: Investing in Indigenous Climate Leadership “Indigenous climate leadership holds the key to a healthy Earth,” said Edgar Villanueva, Founder and CEO of Decolonizing Wealth Project (DWP) and Liberated Capital. “For centuries, Indigenous peoples have nurtured their lands and communities with resilience, wisdom and care.

” DWP’s Indigenous Earth Fund is committed to supporting organizations that advance Indigenous-led protective and regenerative stewardship solutions. Since its inception in 2021, the fund has distributed over $5 million to organizations advancing youth leadership, food sovereignty, buffalo restoration and a range of Indigenous-led climate and land stewardship solutions.

Despite this progress, there is a massive unmet need supporting Indigenous climate leadership as the climate crisis continues to grow. On this call, we will hear from Dr. Dana Arviso, director of Indigenous programs at DWP, as well as two of their Indigenous Earth Fund grantee partners. They will share how this unique funding program and Indigenous-led climate solutions are creating future-oriented impact.

Philanthropy in the Crosshairs: Confronting the Perpetual Backlash Against Justice and Democracy Join DWP Founder/CEO, Edgar Villanueva, alongside fellow philanthropic leaders, foundation program officers, policy officials, researchers, advocates, and community-based organizations for an interactive virtual discussion that will examine the role of philanthropy in advancing civil and human rights, racial and economic justice, and multiracial democracy in the face of political retrenchment, legal threats, and backlash.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the risks foundations face, explore practical strategies for values-aligned giving, and consider how to build authentic partnerships with nonprofits and community-led movements to resist authoritarianism and protect equity-driven progress.

Featured In 2024 Decolonizing Wealth Project launched the CA Tribal Land Return Initiative to provide support to a diverse group of Tribal entities across California leading efforts to return traditional lands to their stewardship and protection. Grantees receive funding along with technical support and assistance in their land return efforts. DWP has awarded 11 grants totaling $1.

65 million supporting 8 individual Tribes and 3 consortiums of Tribes, impacting a total of 31 Tribes including 26 federally recognized Tribes and 4 non-federally recognized Tribes. Collectively, they are in the process of reclaiming and rematriating 25,000 acres of Tribal land!

In this session, DWP and our grant partners will share what we have learned through this initiative, including unexpected challenges and shifting state and federal funding and policies that threaten tribal sovereignty and approaches to land return. We want to share with funders what we are learning to build solidarity across the sector.
